Mrs. E Stanis - Speech

My name is Elizabeth Stanis and I am the speech/language pathologist at Burnham School. I have been at Burnham since January of 1986. Prior to that, I worked for 10 years as the SLP with the early childhood programs in Flossmoor District 161. My educational background includes bachelor’s and master’s degrees in speech and language pathology from Northwestern University as well as additional post graduate classes and workshops in that field and the field of education.

I am a native Chicagoan but have lived my adult life in Hammond where my husband and I raised three children. Now that our children are adults, the students at Burnham are my kids!

My professional goal is to help children develop the oral communication skills necessary to support their academic learning and to be successful communicators both in the classroom and in their lives outside of school. I am fortunate to be able to work with students from pre-k through 8th grade in the classroom, in small groups, or in one-to-one settings. That way, all of the children can get the instruction that helps them be the best communicators they can be.

Mrs. Kaymark - Special Education

As I enter my 35th and last year teaching at Burnham School, I look back with so many fond memories.  I actually began Kindergarten at Burnham School  fifty years ago. Upon graduating 8th grade from Burnham, I went on to graduate from TF North High School, obtain my bachelor’s degree in special/elementary education from Eastern Illinois University, and my master’s degree from Purdue Calumet University.  I have taught 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. This will be my fourth year teaching Resource.  I believe that we are all unique individuals who are capable of flourishing when given the proper resources and encouragement.  I strive to provide your child with the tools he/she needs to succeed, not only at school, but in life.

Mrs. C. Wartman - Reading Specialist

It doesn't seem possible but this is my 35th year of teaching - 34 of those years have been at Burnham School.  During this time, I've enjoyed teaching Kindergarten, 2nd and 3rd grades, Art, and Reading Recovery. Five years ago, the School Board approved a special reading program called The Burnham Plan, which I oversee as the reading specialist.
I received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Doane College in Crete, Nebraska and a master's degree in reading from Concordia University.
My goal is to make your children passionate about reading, and to give them the skills they need to become lifelong learners.
